Derby Quest Horse Racing for iOSIt is fun to watch horse racing, but have you ever wondered what it would be like to own your own horse, train it and then enter it into races? With Derby Quest Horse Racing you can do just that. This is a free game for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch and it is really good. When you start the game you have to choose the sire and dam - the parents - and there are several to choose from. Each has different attributes, such as its starting ability, whether it likes to lead, its stamina and so on. Each ability has a score from 1 to 100. You might select a sire with good stamina and a dam with good endurance, for example, and hope that the foal has the best of both parents.
The foal is then born and it quickly matures (in seconds actually, you don't have to wait long). Now the horse is fully grown you can feed it. A bar on the screen shows its hunger level and you can give it treats like an apple, hay and so on. The horse has six attributes, starter, leader, closer, burst, endurance and competitor. You can select any of these and train the horse. Each is like a mini game and you take the horse out for a run and tap the screen in various ways to train it. For example, you might need to tap the whip icon just at the right moment or tap coloured circles on the screen and similar activities.
After training the horse, it can be entered into a race. The view you get is similar to watching a race on the TV and there are cameras around the course and you see the race in 3D. As the horses gallop around the course you can tap buttons on the screen to make it go to the left or to the right, it can be slowed down, or the whip can be used for a burst of speed.
You earn Derby Coins wherever the horse comes in the race, but the higher placed it is, the more you get. It is not easy and in my first two races I came last! After the race you can use Derby Coins to buy better equipment, such as a superior saddle or horse shoes. The game model is a typical one - it is free to download and play, but if you want to progress faster you can buy Derby Credits with real money through an in-app purchase. This allows you to buy better equipment and other game goodies. The graphics are excellent and the horses are very well drawn and animated. The racing is just like the real thing. It's in 3D and the camera angles are very realistic. It's just like being there. This is a great horse racing game and it is recommended for all horse racing fans.
