Virtual Horse Racing 3D for iPhone and iPadVirtual Horse Racing 3D is an app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch that is available in Lite (free) and full (£1.49) versions. The app enables you to hone your skills at picking winners and see if you can make a million on the horses. You start with $100 in your account, you can view the horses, pick one or more and bet on them to win, come first or second or in the first three. Then you can watch the race and collect your winnings (or not) when it's over. It's just like the real thing.
The app works in an odd way and it seems to do things backward. For example, it first presents you with your betting slip, which is empty of course because you haven't yet bet on anything. Tap the Place Bets button and horse 1 is automatically selected so you can place a bet on it. You have to tap Change to actually see the race card and choose a horse. Surely the race card should be the first screen, then you can choose a horse, then place a bet and view your betting slip last of all.
Although everything is in the wrong order, you get used to it and the game is a lot of fun. The race card shows the horse name, weight, age, sex, % wins, last race result and odds. A horse can be selected and a details screen shows its ability as a series of bars for condition, speed, stamina, starting ability and competitiveness. You can choose any number of horses and place any amount on them to win, come in the first two or three, with the usual reduced odds for placed horses. After placing your bets the race starts and the display is impressive. It is just like watching it on TV and the horses gallop around the course in a very realistic way in 3D. The camera follows them, changes views and so on, just like the real thing.
Virtual Horse Racing 3D is a very entertaining app for the iPhone and iPad. The graphics are excellent and it looks fantastic. There are adverts in the free Lite version, but they are easy to ignore and you can always remove them by purchasing the full version. It's pretty cheap after all.
